They want to know more and more the other countries of the Mediterranean basin, they start considering family as a priority with respect to religion (56%) and they conceive cultural diversity as a source of prosperity (82%), but at the same time a potential risk to social stability (47%).

That’s the portrait of Mediterranean citizens outlined by the new report on intercultural trends and social changes realized by the Anna Lindh Foundationan intergovernmental body based in Alexandria, whose objective is to support trust and mutual understanding between Mediterranean people. It was elaborated on the basis of the first comparative poll carried out by Gallup Europe within 13 member states of the Union for the Mediterranean.

“This new edition of the Anna Lindh Report, the first since the historic Arab Spring, is a valuable tool,” the European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle said, by adding that: “It’s an important signal to political leaders from both sides of the Mediterranean that their citizens are trying to work together and find new and alternative ways of participation in their societies”.
